Screening for Atrial Fibrillation with ECG to Reduce stroke

The study will provide definitive evidence about the benefits and long-term study outcomes of screening for early detection of Atrial Fibrillation in participants 70yrs and older.

About the Trial

SAFER-AUS is being led by Professor Ben Freedman of the Heart Research Institute (HRI) and the University of Sydney. The study is an international trial of screening for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) being completed in the UK through University of Cambridge and SAFER-AUS is the Australian arm in NSW, Sydney and WA.

The trial is investigating the use of handheld ECG screening devices within GP clinics to detect undiagnosed AF in patients over 70 years old.

Recruitment is through study registered GP practices, with eligible participants receiving an information letter, should their practice be involved.

How the ECG Machine Works

Diagnosis of AF is through the Zenicor single lead “Thumb” ECG machine.
Very simple to use – participants take a reading 4 times per day for 3 weeks.
Any readings which show possible AF are reviewed and confirmed by a consultant cardiologist.
A report with the diagnosis is sent to the participants GP who will discuss possible treatment options with them.
